Wanting to go to School

Hello! I am strongly considering going to school in January to be a dental hygienist. For those that have graduated, is the job what you thought it would be? Is it better/worse? What do your work weeks typically look like? Can you choose to only work with children or do you have to do anyone thrown your way?

For those in Wisconsin, what school did you attend?

Does anyone have any pointers on how to hand scale with speed and accuracy? I’m trying my best to finish patients in 1 dental appointment :/

How to find patients for regular school clinic days?

I just started my 2nd semester of dental hygiene school and we are about to start working with real patients. However, I don’t have any patients to work on; the recall list provided by my institution resulted in 3 people not answering, 1 person telling me that my clinic times would not work with their schedule, and 1 person telling me that they now live on the other side of the country. Help!? I don’t have any good friends outside of the program that I can ask for something like this and my immediate family is small, I only have about 3 people I can count on and we are required to have 5 for this semester alone.

Any tips are greatly appreciated because the stress of finding patients is not something that I had expected to be so difficult.

How do I stand out for being accepted into dental hygiene school?

I was selected as one of the top 50 applicants to complete a proctored essay in a few weeks for entrance into the dental hygiene program in the Portland area.
I worked really hard to get a 4.0 in all of my pre-requisites. I also have experience as a dental assistant. But now I am worried I will not write a good enough essay and all my sleepless nights and time I missed with my 1-year-old while doing homework will be for nothing.
Do you have any tips on how I can make my essay stand out from the other applicants?
Thank you!

Dental Hygiene Prerequisites

Hi! I’m currently doing my prerequisites to try to apply into a dental hygiene program. I’m looking at completing my bachelor’s degree for it. I’m almost done with my prereq classes but I’m a little concerned with my gpa. A lot of the programs says the minimum is a 2.2 and a 3.0 gpa. I just wanted to know what gpa did you guys have while applying and how much does it impact you getting into the program?

My gpa is a 3.4!

Benefits and wage

Hi all! I am looking into dental hygiene as it has been something I have been interested in for quite some time. Currently, I’m 27, I work as a sign language interpreter and am seriously considering quitting my job to pursue this career. I wanted to know about benefits and pay. Is this a career where you would get benefits through your employer? I’m sure it depends, just want to know what the majority says. Also, if anyone wouldn’t mind divulging what they got paid/hours worked when they started? I work at a school currently doing ASL but my salary caps at around 53,000 a year and I just feel like I need to earn more than that. I am absolutely willing to work my butt off but just wondering what those who are in the field are making if I’m not being too nosey. It is not all about the money, I am very interested in the field because it is something I feel I can be really good at. I’m just looking for where to start.

What should I do?

I’ve recently became interested in becoming a dental hygienist. However, there is a 4-year university that I’m planning to attend, and they have a pre-dental school but I’m not quite sure they have a dental hygiene program. So the question I’m asking is should I go to their pre-dental school to become a BH or are they two separate things? Any information regarding education pathway would really be helpful!

I applied to a dental hygiene program and hoping to be accepted starting Fall semester. I am a mom of 3. Did anyone go through dental hygiene school with kids? If so, how were you able to afford living costs since the program is demanding? Any advice is appreciated!!

Hi! I’m currently in school for Dental Hygiene. I am looking for any tips/information regarding Pennsylvania RDH boards? Although i am prideful of my school, this is the first year that my school is offering this program, so it’s been a little unorganized and stressful. I won’t be graduating and taking my boards until summer 2022, but I’m the type of person that gets anxiety about major life moves like this and want to be as prepared as possible. I am also looking for any tips about career moves once I do take/pass boards. Obviously i know that I can be a dental hygienist in a dental office, but I’m wondering if anyone can shed some insight on more career moves, such as dental sales, entrepreneur moves, education, administration, corporate businesses, basically anything else that I’m missing, I just want to be educated and prepared in all of my options!
